ALL ABOUT ICE-FISHING

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ICE-FISHING

So you want to go fishing on the ice? Or perhaps you already do. Some of my buddies absolutely love fishing on ice, they value the solitude and quiet, not unlike a fly fisherman. As one of my close ice fishing friends tells me, it’s just him and Jack (Daniels).

Whether you go Fishing on Lake Erie or choose to go Fishing in Minnesota the practices are fairly similar.

Ice fishing started with North American natives and Eskimos spearing fish through holes that they chopped in the ice, and then using various lures and decoys to bring fish to the opening. These days it’s become a lot more sophisticated.

These days it’s a bit more comfortable than kneeling on the ice. Safety is essential and the ice must be at least 4 inches thick to support weight. If you know people who go ice-fishing then its always a good idea to get some Fishing Tips .

WHAT YOU NEED TO GO ICE-FISHING

While some hardy souls are happy on a day ice-fishing trip to sit on a stool and wear good clothing (As to clothing, well my Norwegian friends tell me there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing!) many serious ice fishermen choose to have an Fishing Hut or an Fishing Sled or Fishing Shanty or Fishing Houses or a bob house or ice hut as they are also often called.

There are quite a variety of Ice Fishing House Plans around to choose from. You can build one yourself or buy one off the shelf.

Some of these Ice Fishing Houses are quite comfortable and including a bunk, power form a portable generator, lights, a frig and cooking facilities and allow a few days on the ice or a group to go ice fishing in comfort. These Ice Fishing Shelters come in a variety of designs and must be rigid enough to withstand movement on and off and around the ice, and offer basic insulation and wind proofing. Weight is an important factor of course. Usually these are towed across the ice using a snowmobile or truck

Once you have your Ice Fishing Shelter sorted out you need to consider what Ice Fishing Equipment you need. Ice Fishing Tackle is a little different to the gear you use in summer. .

First you need to make a hole in the ice. These means you need a saw, ice spade or an auger to cut through the ice. As the hole may start icing over quickly you may also require an ice skimmer or chipper to clear and maintain the hole opening while you make the hole and while you are ice-fishing. There is some skill in getting this right so always ask fellow fishermen if you are new for some Ice Fishing Tips

Ice Fishing Gear comes in an equally wide variety of options. A long fishing pole or fishing rod used in rivers and beaches is of little use so a small, short lightweight Ice Fishing Rod is required and the design varies depending on what species you are after such trout, crappie etc Like all rods these range from ultra light to medium action rods, as well as very low cost to the very highest name brands. Then there is Ice Fishing Lures to consider depending on species and location. Then you need to look at Ice Fishing Line to go with the rod and also an Ice Fishing Reel .

Some also use a flasher type fish finder to locate fish and the depth they are at. The more well budgeted fishermen also use some neat underwater camera systems to observe their prey. There is so much to know and learn about ice-fishing. This site will try and give you lots of useful and practical information.
